This was such a gripping, candid, and generous account of what it's like to be an author. My personal hope is that both books get published. For me, setting aside manuscripts has often been the perfect way to gain perspective, and it can be a delightful surprise to come back to them and feel more connection and inspiration. On top of that, I don't think anyone else can tell us when a project is DOA.

I do think #4 is an improvement on #2--the rest time felt like it really did something for me. I do plan to go back to #3 at some point and see what the break has done, if anything.

Caitlin, glad to hear your characters are working after much trial and error. Parallels my novel, were about halfway in, I realized the characters weren’t working. I knew them only on the surface, with a few shallow conversations (sometimes in my head, sometimes out loud (the latter never in a coffee shop)). After digging deeper than I ever thought, they’re becoming real and worth writing about. Novel has resumed. Best of luck in driving through to the finish.

The characters have SO MUCH CONTROL over the writing experience, don't they? I'm glad to hear you've had a breakthrough as well (and hopefully didn't get banned from your favorite coffee shop in the process). Good luck to us BOTH!

Omg, Caitlin. I love this post. It's so honest, and devastating. Too much to write here. This one calls for a voice note! xoxo
