If it weren’t for the timestamps I wouldn’t believe it, but Andromeda and I have officially been writing this Substack for a year, WITHOUT MISSING A SINGLE WEEK.
Andromeda and Shana’s co-written piece on Lisa Jewell was our one-year piece; I think it was one of my favorite pieces of the year, too, as a fledgling writer who appreciates all that distilled LJ inspiration.
Andromeda and I have been talking about marking the occasion somehow. We’ve also been talking about making some kind of subscriber-only content, to (1) selflessly thank subscribers and (2) selfishly boost subscriptions. Then one day, looking at the PT birthday in one hand and the subscriber content in the other, I said:
So here it is: as a birthday gift to our subscribers, we’ve written a subscribers-only piece called Our Four Rules for Executing a Great Twist.
All new subscribers will automatically receive a link to this piece in the welcome email when they sign up. Current subscribers, you should have received (or should soon receive) an email from us with a link to the PDF. If you don’t receive it and want it, please email us at presenttensesubstack [at] gmail [dot] com and I will send you the link myself. (Please don’t be shy about this; you are the ones we appreciate so much!!)
To our entire community of readers, whether or not you choose to let us into your inboxes: thank you so, so very much for reading, sharing, commenting, and texting us on the side about our pieces. It’s taken a fair amount of work over the past year, but knowing someone out there is enjoying it has kept it fun. (That and the countless hours we’ve spent searching for the perfect gifs.)
Any other ideas for proscriptive posts like the twist one? Drop them in the comments and we’ll probably do a normal post on it, or maybe even another top secret one!
Happy Birthday to us--one year without missing* a weekly post deadline, wow!--and thanks to our readers and especially our commenters and especially especially our guest-posters! We appreciate you!
*Despite COVID, holidays, one child's regular sickness stuff, two adults' regular fatigue stuff, one Ironman triathlon, guests, deadlines, crappy politics, hangovers... okay, I'd better stop there before this becomes a confessional memoir. Love you !
How generous! Thank you both for a year of truly helpful and entertaining content! Looking forward to the next year!
